needlepoint instructions

I have included this page to quieten the cries of "but I don't know how to do needlepoint!"

Just look how easy it is…

Wool has been doubled

1. The wool has been doubled

To start, thread through, leaving a tail of about 1 1/2cm

2. To start, thread through. Leave a tail of about 1½cm. Hold the tail with your finger, or a piece of tape.

Start the row with half cross stitch

3. Start the row, or section, with half cross stitch.

Go back in the opposite direction to complete the cross

4. Go back in the opposite direction to complete the cross.

It is supposed to look beautiful and neat on the back too (or is that just me being fussy?)

5. To finish off, thread carefully through existing stitches on the back. THIS IS A KNOT-FREE ZONE! It is supposed to look beautiful and neat on the back too (or is that just me being fussy?).

This drawing may be helpful if you are not using a frame.

how to sew canvas onto a frame

This is the most boring part - but it's worth it, as it is easier and quicker to use a frame.

Go on ... get yourself a needlepoint frame.

Needlepoint is easier with one of these frames! Mine is attached to a floor-standing frame, so you work as if you are sitting at a table, but you can also rest the frame over the arms of a chair.

Canvas goes behind the frame

1. The canvas sits behind the frame to keep it clean and neat.

Where to start stitching

2. Line up the canvas, making sure it is straight along the material attached to the dowel.

Stitch along canvas

3. Start stitching, making sure canvas is straight, and using fairly small stitches.

First end attached!

4. OK, first end is attached - pull taut to ensure it is straight - if it is not straight, unpull and start again - it will be worth it!

Roll up attached end

5. Roll up the attached end, making sure it is straight.

Start stitching other end

6. Start stitching the other end, keeping straight and in line with the first end.

Second end attached!

7. Right, second end is attached.

You're reading to start stitching!

9. Turn the frame over, tighten the dowels, and get ready for some serious (or not so serious) stitching!
